About Us

How it all began

Learning - Your Way.

At Rubato, we believe in the power of unstructured learning. Our lessons are free from rigid curriculums, led by trained instructors with real-world gigging experience. Each session is bespoke, tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of every student. Dive into a learning experience like no other with us.

Doing it different.

It all started as a passing remark at a cafe, the idea of opening a space for both instructors and budding musicians, focusing on creative, fair and flexible music education. This became an undeniable drive.

Fueled by a questionable amount of crazy and determination, Grace decided to put her further studies in psychology aside to explore this hope-fueled venture into introducing a newer approach to music that caters to the mental development of individuals and the care for music educators. She would like to stress that it wouldn’t even be made possible without the help and support of friends and family.

What we stand for.

Flexibility

Whether you’re trying to be a better musician, learning how to play an instrument for the first time or figuring out the nuances of being an artist, we can help you succeed. Our flexible music lessons and customizable options give students a unique learning experience that lets them build skills quickly, confidently and comfortably.

Progressiveness

We take a bold approach to the future by understanding that progressivism is not just a mindset; it’s a risk and opportunity. We are forward looking, expansive, open-minded and innovative. We welcome diverse perspectives and value the strength of our differences; we thrive on change and find inspiration in the vibrant world around us.

Community

Music is a way of meaningfully connecting people together. We’re more than just a space to learn music - we’re a community. We encourage students and teachers to collaborate and jam together, and also welcome other communities to come together at our space! Meeting new people, forging connections, and creating art together are all integral to the extraordinary music scene we foster.

FAQs

  • We’re not your typical music academy with strict levels, curriculum, and exams. Instead, we prioritize creative and personalized learning that caters to each student’s needs. Our experienced instructors adapt their teaching styles to this flexible approach. Think of it as a customized “masterclass” for beginners to advanced students. No need to learn everything—focus on what you’re truly passionate about.

With us, you have the liberty to learn what you want, explore your musical passions, and pursue your unique artistic journey without stress or external pressure.

  • Let us pose a question to that:

Why bother with more grades and exams when school and work already stresses us out?

The current education system, including music academies, is filled with rigid structures and achievements. There’s not much room for creativity, self-expression, or personal growth.

But this school is here to change that! We want to give teachers the freedom to tailor lessons to what students really need, without being bound by structures. We want students to learn in a way that sparks their creativity and lets them make their own choices. It’s all about finding a new perspective on themselves and their potential.

We believe that music is a magical tool for expressing feelings and connecting with others beyond words. But when passing exams and moving up levels becomes the main focus, that magic can fade away.

We know this alternative approach isn’t for everyone, and we’re not saying it’s better than traditional music academies – some people thrive in structured systems with grades and exams. We just want to offer another option for those who might benefit from it—because we did.

  • Aside from guiding you how to personally track your progress, and our instructors giving you feedback on your learning journey, we will host a showcase once or twice a year.

We hope that doing this will motivate students to progress towards a goal that isn’t given to them but self-established. We see music as a very personal journey and feel like we should create a space where one can understand their progress and how they want to proceed, free from the constraints of a standardized structure that may not align with their unique aspirations and inclinations.

  • It wouldn’t seem right to penalize people with increased monetary cost just to advance their music knowledge. The only limit is what the instructor is able to teach you – not the cost.

  • We believe that selecting the right instructor is crucial for effective learning in any field. That’s why we structure our classes and prices around individual instructors, giving students the freedom to choose based on what matters most to them—whether it’s genre expertise, personality, relatability, or other factors.

  • Our pricing takes into account several important factors:

    • The instructors’ assessment of their teaching quality based on their current skill level.

    • Their extensive experience in areas such as performance, original art, and formal education.

    • The number of years they have dedicated to music and teaching.

Rest assured – all prices have been carefully considered and scaled by RUBATO’s management team.
